Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* Rep.-elect Luke Letlow (R-La.), who was just elected to Congress earlier this month, died last night from complications of COVID-19, just days before the 41-year-old Republican was scheduled to be sworn in.
* In related news, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) will reportedly call a special election on March 20 to fill Letlow’s vacancy. It’s likely this will coincide with another special election in a nearby congressional district: Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La.) is also creating a vacancy by joining Joe Biden’s White House team.
* Law enforcement officials in Georgia conducted an audit of over 15,000 voter signatures, and to the surprise of no one in touch with reality, investigators found zero fraudulent ballots.
* With control of the Senate on the line, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will return to Georgia on Sunday in support of Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. The day after Harris headlines an event in Savannah, Joe Biden will campaign for the Democratic Senate hopefuls in Atlanta. Also on Monday, Donald Trump will hold a rally in Georgia in support of Republican Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue.
* On a related note, Ossoff this morning unveiled a new, minute-long campaign ad this morning featuring narration from Barack Obama and John Legend singing “Georgia On My Mind.” * Early-voting in Georgia continues to impress: as of yesterday, more than 2.3 million Georgians have cast ballots. That breaks the state’s record, set in 2008, and with Election Day coming on Tuesday, the total will continue to grow. * And for those still keeping an eye on the series of failed anti-election lawsuits, Trump’s legal team yesterday asked the U.S. Supreme Court “to reverse Wisconsin’s high court, set aside the state’s presidential election and allow Republicans who control the Legislature to decide how to cast the state’s 10 electoral votes.” There’s no reason to believe this will work.
