Today, Washington state cemented its commitment to marriage equality. Surrounded by gay rights advocates and legislators in Olympia, Governor Christine Gregoire signed a new bill to legalize same-sex marriage.Washington became the seventh state in the country to formally recognize these unions, following the leads of New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Iowa, as well as the District of Columbia.State lawmakers approved legislation last Wednesday. But, the law won’t go into effect until early June — standard 90 grace period.Opponents have vowed to repeal it.
