A large chunk of southern voters remain deeply skeptical about President Obama’s religion. A new survey out today from Public Policy Polling reveals about half of Republican voters in Alabama and Mississippi believe the president is a Muslim.
In Alabama, 45 percent say he’s a Muslim, 41 percent aren’t sure and 14 percent think Obama’s a Christian. In Mississippi, 52 percent of likely GOP voters say Obama’s a Muslim, 36 percent aren’t sure and only 12 percent take his word that he’s a Christian.
In reality, Obama is a Christian. This perception issue has plagued the Obama campaign for years now, despite evidence to the contrary.
Many anti-Obama conspiracy theorists claim he’s a secret Muslim who wasn’t born in the United States.
Alabama and Mississippi hold their GOP primary elections tomorrow. Alabama Governor Robert Bentley said religion could get in the way for Mitt Romney. He said today Romney’s Mormonism “may be a problem in many states, not just in Alabama.”
