Rick Santorum announced today the presidential race “is over for me.” The sweater vest-loving former senator from Pennsylvania officially suspended his campaign after weeks of hitting road blocks on the campaign trail.
“We made a decision over the weekend that while this presidential race is over for me, and we will suspend this campaign effective today, we are not done fighting,” Santorum told reporters in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He said he made the decision with his family over the weekend after the latest hospitalized of his youngest daughter, Bella.
After losing a handful of primary elections last week, Santorum declared it was only “halftime” in the GOP race. The possibility of losing his home state of Pennsylvania in the upcoming primary, also could have been a motivating factor to drop out now.
With Santorum out, it puts Mitt Romney on a likely track to secure the GOP nomination. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Rep. Ron Paul remain holdouts in the race. Santorum didn’t drop Romney’s name or offer up any endorsement. Instead he stressed his own success “against all odds” in his speech. On his website, Romney congratulated Santo for being “an able and worthy competitor.” The statement said, “He has proven himself to be an important voice in our party and in the nation. We both recognize that what is most important is putting the failures of the last three years behind us and setting America back on the path to prosperity.”
