Four years and 90 minutes later, it’s all starting to come together.
39,760 fans gathered together on Monday at Arena das Dunas to watch the U.S. Men’s Soccer team beat Ghana 2-1 in their first match of the World Cup. Among those in the crowd cheering for Team USA was Vice President Joe Biden, who wished the team luck on Twitter prior to the match.

While the U.S had a substantial crowd at the arena, it was also clear on Monday that many more Americans were standing behind Team USA through social media. When Clint Dempsey scored in the first minute of the match, fans across the world exploded with excitement on Twitter, generating 173,738 tweets per minute–the biggest peak of Twitter conversation during the match. While the actual match was not the most tweeted about World Cup, there were more than 4.9 million tweets during the broadcast.
