While Americans are still reeling from the horror of Monday’s attack in Boston, Washington Post columnist Matt Miller points out how much worse things could have been had we not been so smart, so vigilant, and so lucky.
We are “vulnerable as a free society–not just to sophisticated attacks like 9/11 but very low tech ways that we can be disrupted by,” Matt Miller said on Wednesday’s show. “So when you think about how scary the potential is, in a real sense… we have been very lucky these past 10 or 12 years that it hasn’t been worse.”
The Marathon bombing may have hit Boston directly, but “when something like this hits, it strikes fear into everyone’s hearts, and that’s clearly the intent of a heinous action like this,” Miller said. “We have to be in a permanent state of vigilance because this is what modern life is like.”
Events like these bridge political or ideological differences–briefly. “We are in the era where the honeymoon is over very quickly,” Miller said. “We’ve got closely divided power and unfortunately we’ve got parties that want to go at each other. I think it’s sad that it’s like that; I think it alienates a big chunk of the American people, but sadly that’s where we are.”
