Ladies & Gents –
This week, the White House is hosting a Summit on Working Families to focus on creating a 21st century workplace that works for all Americans.
It’s just good business. For the US economy to thrive in a competitive global market, it make sense to make maximum use of the pool of talented workers – women and men – and allow them the flexibility to balance work and family. The labor force has profoundly changed over the last 50 years – with a dramatic increase of women entering the workplace. We now know that mothers are a significant source of financial support and the old concept of “dad as the breadwinner” is outdated. Plus a new study from Boston College’s Center for Work & Family shows that 89% of American men say that paid parental leave is important.
The U.S. trails most of the globe; it is one of only four nations worldwide that do not guarantee workers paid family leave (the other three countries are Lesotho, Papua New Guinea and Swaziland!!).
