The measles outbreak continues to grow; the number of cases in the U.S. has reached 102, according to new numbers just released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A record 644 measles cases were reported in the US in 2014, the most since it was declared eliminated in 2000.
The CDC says the majority of people infected this year were unvaccinated. That’s partly due to the small number of parents who believe vaccines contain dangerous chemicals and choose alternative treatments. The argument is framed as one of personal freedom and choice.
But this outbreak of is putting all Americans at risk. The CDC just issued an advisory this month calling for “high measles vaccine coverage”.
