Today’s installment of campaign-related news items that won’t necessarily generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers:
* Following up on Tricia’s report this morning, Sen. Orrin Hatch will face former state Sen. Dan Liljenquist in a Republican primary this year, after coming up short of 60% at Utah’s GOP state convention over the weekend. This is Hatch’s first meaningful challenge since 1976.
* Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has said publicly that he’d turn down a VP nomination, but yesterday changed his tune slightly, saying he will no longer “discuss the process anymore.”
* Rubio, incidentally, will be campaigning in Pennsylvania with Mitt Romney today.
* On a related note, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) said late last week that he’d “consider” a spot on Mitt Romney’s ticket, but he doesn’t expect an invitation.
* Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, for the record, doesn’t want to be Romney’s running mate, though some recent polling suggests she’d be a popular choice. * Former Rep. Virgil Goode has picked up the Constitution Party’s presidential nomination. (The Constitution Party believes Republicans aren’t extreme enough.) * And in Indiana, with just two weeks remaining before a closely-watched Republican primary, Gov. Mitch Daniels (R) has a new ad touting his support for incumbent Sen. Richard Lugar. The senator is facing a tough challenge from state Treasurer Richard Mourdock.
