Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* We’re still waiting for the results in several key Democratic primaries yesterday, but as things stand, it looks like House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel is trailing Jamaal Bowman, a middle-school principal making his first bid for elected office.
* The latest New York Times/Siena College poll, released this morning, found Joe Biden with a surprisingly large lead over Donald Trump, 50% to 36%. Among the president’s many troubles: the national survey found him trailing by 21 points among self-identified independent voters, and 22 points among women. Biden has a narrow lead among voters 65 and older — a constituency that backed the Republican ticket by an eight-point margin four years ago.
* Former President Barack Obama participated in a virtual fundraiser for Biden last night, according to an Axios report, the gathering brought in $7.6 million from over 175,000 people. That would make it the former vice president’s best fundraiser to date.
* On a related note, former President George W. Bush will appear in a virtual fundraiser next week for four vulnerable Republican senators: Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Cory Gardner (Colo.), Martha McSally (Ariz.), and Thom Tillis (N.C.).
