While some celebrities avoid discussing politically divisive topics, Sarah Silverman is not shy about expressing her opinion. In her interview with Alex Wagner Thursday, Silverman expressed her disgust with Mike Huckabee’s statement denouncing a woman’s right to contraception.
Huckabee said “ if the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing them a prescription each month for their birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it…”
When pressed by Wagner about the shifting Republican focus from unborn fetuses to women’s health in the abortion issue, Silverman said, “it’s total hypocrisy. These are a people that are anti-big government and yet they want to make laws about… what I do with my body.”
At the end of the interview, Silverman expressed her concern with how unaware most women are about the current state of abortion legislation. In addition to attending fundraisers, Silverman works with Lizz Winstead, founder of the website ladypartsjustice.com, to spread awareness about women’s’ rights.
