Here are the the top stories of the morning:
- A black 18-year-old, identified as Mansur Ball-Bey, was shot and killed by two white police officers in St. Louis. Police used tear gas to break up a protest late Wednesday over the police shooting death of Mansur Ball-Bey, an 18-year-old black man police said pointed a gun at officers during a home search. Nine people were arrested after protesters threw battles and bricks at officers, according to police.
- Hillary Clinton’s campaign is once again defending her amid the email controversy, naming two emails released by Fox News, which, in the opinion of the Clinton camp, vindicate Clinton’s vow that she broke no laws. In a conference call with reporters, Clinton said that the two emails, dated April 10, 2011 and Nov. 18,2012, show a dispute between the State Department and intelligence community on what should be classified and/or the over-classification from some government quarters. The campaign stressed that the emails do not reflect badly on Clinton, but rather reflect the secrecy in some parts of government.
- Three firefighters were killed and three others were injured while fighting one of the many mammoth wildfires scorching more than 1.1 million acres in the West. The deaths occurred when the winds unexpectedly shifted and turned back on the crews fighting the fire. Residents of two towns near the fire were ordered to evacuate almost immediately.
- The accuser in the ongoing St. Paul’s School assault trial took the stand once again on Wednesday, recounting the night she was allegedly raped as a freshman by then-senior Owen Labrie. On the second day of testimony, the girl explained to the court the events leading up to, during and after the alleged assault, and also the communication between her and Labrie.
- Donald Trump is not going anywhere. At a news conference Wednesday, Trump responded to detractors who believe he’ll eventually call it quits, turning them down and insisting that he is “doing this to make America great again.” Despite several controversies in recent weeks, including his feud with Fox News moderator Megyn Kelly, Trump still remains at the top of the polls.
