For all the Mitt Romney fans hoping for a third presidential bid, the former Massachusetts governor has an answer straight from “Dumb and Dumber.”
Romney referenced a scene from the 1994 classic during an interview Tuesday over his 2016 prospects — the one where Lloyd bellows “there’s a chance!” upon being told that chance is minuscule.
Still, as Lloyd overlooks: that chance is very, very slim. Romney told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt the chances he’d run again are “one of a million.”
“Well, you know, let’s say all the guys that were running all came together and said, ‘Hey, we’ve decided we can’t do it, you must do it,’” Romney explained. “That’s the one of the million we’re thinking about.”
While it’s unlikely there’d be no competition, Romney’s fans have definitely said as much: Former running mate Paul Ryan said on Hewitt’s show Monday that he wished Romney would run again.
Romney has repeatedly said he won’t make another bid, but his popularity is on the rise — a sign of buyer’s remorse, fans say. A documentary film released early this year softened his image, showing the kind of heart his campaign was criticized for lacking. Still, he stressed that he doesn’t think he could beat the expected Democratic nominee. “Had I believed I would actually be best positioned to beat Hillary Clinton, then I would be running. But I actually believe that someone new that is not defined yet — someone who perhaps is from the next generation — will be able to catch fire, potentially, build a movement, and be able to beat Hillary Clinton. If I thought that weren’t the case, then I’d be running,” Romney said. “Circumstances can change, but I’m not going to let my head go there,” Romney added.
