Friday night on All In with Chris Hayes: the cost of college has skyrocketed and President Obama is pushing for a major overhaul of the higher education system. At a town hall at Binghamton University Friday, the President answered questions from students and talked about making college more affordable thorough measures such as cheaper loans and more financial aid. Matt Taibbi, Contributing Editor for Rolling Stone, will join Chris Hayes to talk about the crisis of student loan debt and what we can do about it.
Chris Hayes will also talk with Ed Rensi, founder and wwner of Tom & Eddie’s Gourmet Burgers and Shakes and former President and CEO of McDonald’s, about the fight over raising the minimum wage. Fast-food workers have been striking nationwide this summer to protest their low pay.
Later, Chris Hayes will explain how Russian LGBT activist Masha Gessen convinced him that boycotts are an effective way to fight back against Russia’s anti-gay laws. Gessen spoke with Hayes about the homophobic legislation in her home country on All In Thursday night. (Watch it here: ow.ly/odbR3)
Plus: it’s been 50 years since the March On Washington and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech, but racial inequality persists in America. According to a study by Brandeis University, the wealth gap between blacks and whites has actually increased, tripling over the past 25 years. Many of America’s schools are also still effectively segregated, with 74.1% of black children attending majority nonwhite schools in 2010. Gary Younge, Columnist for The Nation and The Guardian and author of “The Speech: The Story Behind Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Dream,” Ben Jealous, President and CEO of the NAACP, and Peter Yarrow, activist and folk singer, will join the conversation about the progress we have and haven’t made since 1963.
