Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* Among the many interesting primary results yesterday was Colorado’s Democratic U.S. Senate race, which turned out to be a one-sided affair: former Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) overcame some recent missteps and won by about 20 points.
* In the latest national poll from the Pew Research Center, released yesterday, Joe Biden led Donald Trump among registered voters, 54% to 44%.
* And while Republicans probably found those results discouraging, the latest national USA Today/Suffolk poll was slightly worse for the presidential incumbent: it found the Delaware Democrat leading Trump, 53% to 41%.
* The president had planned to travel to Alabama next weekend to campaign against his former attorney general, Jeff Sessions, but the coronavirus outbreak has derailed the scheduled rally. Sessions is facing retired college football coach Tommy Tuberville in a Republican U.S. Senate runoff in two weeks.
* The Republican National Committee and the Trump campaign filed a lawsuit this week to prohibit Pennsylvania voters from submitting mail-in ballots in official drop boxes. * Few expect Kentucky to be competitive in 2020, but Democratic officials were nevertheless eager to boast yesterday that a state Senate seat flipped this week from “red” to “blue.” Trump carried this district by 12 points four years ago. * The Lincoln Project, led by anti-Trump Republicans, unveiled a new minute-long video yesterday, featuring retired Navy SEAL Dr. Dan Barkhuff slamming the president over the Russia/bounty scandal. * And on a related note, Club for Growth Action, a far-right super PAC, launched a new attack ad this week targeting the Lincoln Project, accusing it of being led by failed GOP strategists. Off the top of my head, I’m not aware of any other instances in which one Republican super PAC aired an attack ad against a different Republican super PAC.
