Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter tells Weekends with Alex Witt that she feels “optimistic” and “hopeful” about this morning’s announcement that Russia agreed to a deal giving Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government one week to provide a full listing of its stockpile.
As to whether or not the New Hampshire Democrat has a clear sense that Assad’s weapons would be able to be gathered and veritably destroyed, she said, “It is going to be difficult and a lot has to be hammered out.”
Shea-Porter does not take punitive repercussions off of the table for Assad given the agreement with Russia. If Assad does not comply she said, “There is no reason that at some point we cannot punish Assad.”
