On Sunday’s Up w/ Chris Hayes, we’ll examine the class action lawsuit against the NYPD over its controversial policy of stopping, questioning, and frisking people on the street, a tactic known as “stop and frisk.” The trial, which began on Monday, has become a flashpoint in what is likely to be the most hotly contested political race of 2013 – the New York City mayoral race. We’ll have an entire panel of Democratic candidates for mayor here to talk about the stop and frisk trial, as well as paid sick leave, New York’s soda ban, poverty, income inequality and other issues that will play a role in both the national political discourse and the mayor’s race.
Then we’ll discuss the remarkable social and political progress on LGBT issues, and some of the major new milestones we saw this week. A new poll shows record-high approval for same-sex marriage, and even the GOP has concluded that it’s views on LGBT issues may be alienating younger voters. We’ll also examine the major constitutional issues surrounding the monumental gay rights cases that will reach the Supreme Court next week: California’s proposition 8, which bans gay marriage in that state, and the federal Defense of Marriage Act.
