Homer, Marge and the kids call Springfield, Oregon their home. The Simpsons creator Matt Groening finally revealed location of the real Springfield, settling many bets and a long-running joke on the show.
It seems like every state has its own town called Springfield, which is precisely why Groening picked the name as a setting according to Smithsonian Magazine:
“Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon. The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show Father Knows Best took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown. When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, ‘This will be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.’’ And they do.”
After 23 years on air, the show has now become the longest running American sitcom.
Springfield, Oregon embraces its fictitious counterpart. The Springfield Museum displays a couch similar to the animated one in the ever-changing opening credits and a plaque to commemorate the movie’s release.
