Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy wants NASCAR to give gun lobbyists the red light.
The Democratic senator sent a letter to Brian France, chairman and CEO of the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing, urging them to “reconsider” allowing the Nation Rifle Association to sponsor one of their big races in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre.
“By giving the NRA sponsorship of a major NASCAR race, NASCAR has crossed a line–you have decided to put yourself in the middle of a political debate, and you have taken a side that stands in opposition to the wishes of so many Newtown families who support common sense gun reform,” he wrote. “Whether or not this was your intention, your fans will infer from this sponsorship that NASCAR and the NRA are allies in the current legislative debate over gun violence. By announcing this new partnership at the very height of Congress’s deliberations over gun reform, NASCAR has inserted itself into a political debate that has nothing to with the business of NASCAR.”
The NRA signed a deal with Texas Motor Speedway to become the title sponsor of the Sprint Cup Series race on April 13 in Fort Worth, Texas. The event is now officially known as the NRA 500.
According to the Associated Press, Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gossage said, “It’s not about politics. It’s about sports marketing.”
Last week, NASCAR issued a statement saying the NRA 500 falls in line with their policies. “The race sponsor for Texas Motor Speedway’s April event falls within the guidelines for approval for that event,” the statement read.
In February, NASCAR honored victims of the Newtown shooting at the Daytona 500 with car #26 –a symbolic number chosen to represent the deaths on Dec. 14 of 20 children and six educators. Driven by Michael Waltrip, the Toyota Camry was decked out in white and green colors and displayed instructions on how to donate to the Sandy Hook Support Fund.
Murphy noted NASCAR’s generosity supporting the families of Newtown in his letter, and asked they’d reconsider on behalf of the families. “Why take sides against the families of Newtown, Connecticut, by teaming up with the NRA in the middle of an intense legislative fight over gun laws?” He concluded, “In light of your extensive charitable work and generosity to the Newtown community, I hope that you will reconsider affiliating with the NRA at this time. Thank you in advance for your consideration.”
