Plus, the Manchin-Toomey bill to expand background checks is slowly picking up votes, but it’s expected to be a close one in the Senate. Right now, at least four Republicans senators have committed to support it: Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, Mark Kirk of Illinois, Susan Collins of Maine and John McCain of Arizona. Breaking with the powerful National Rifle Association, a pro-gun rights advocacy group, Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, endorsed the measure.
