Connecticut is on its way to becoming the 17th state to nix the death penalty.
Gov. Dannel Malloy pledged to sign the bill into law. After nearly 10 hours of intense debate, lawmakers in the state House passed the measure in an 86-62 vote on Wednesday. It cleared through the state Senate last week.
The law replaces capital punishment with a life in prison sentence without the possibility of parole. Though, it only applies to future cases and, therefore, does not affect the 11 men currently on death row in Connecticut.
According to The Hartford Courant, there’s been one execution in Connecticut in the past 50 years which involved a serial killer who waived appeals.
