UPDATE: NBC News called Virginia for Mitt Romney at 7:17 p.m. ET.
NBC News has projected Newt Gingrich as the winner of the primary in Georgia as polls begin to close in some of the 11 Super Tuesday states. Mitt Romney leads in Vermont and Virginia’s primaries, though both of those races are too early to call. NBC News projected the former House speaker as the winner in Georgia, the state where he served as a congressman, and which Gingrich had said was a must-win contest for him this Tuesday in order to forge ahead with his candidacy.
