In its first TV ad of the 2014 cycle, the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has gone old school– video game old school, that is–with a spot hoping to convince Louisiana voters to oust Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu.
The new commercial is an homage on the popular 1980s Nintendo game “Duck Hunt,” hitting the three-term senator over health care and the economy.
What’s more, it’s airing during a key time slot in the Pelican State: tonight’s premiere of the popular A&E series “Duck Dynasty,” which chronicles the Robinson family and their West Monroe duck call business. The spot will also run over the next two weeks on cable. (Duck Hunt on Duck Dynasty. Get it?)
“Mary Landrieu’s got bad aim. On healthcare, energy, taxes, and jobs. She keeps firing and missing,” the ad says. “It is time for Mary to start shooting straight for Louisiana and stop masquerading as someone she is not.”
Landrieu is one of the top vulnerable Democratic incumbents who Republicans are targeting in a state where President Obama took just 41% last year. If Democrat Cory Booker does win back the New Jersey Senate seat in October, Republicans need six seats to flip to gain control of the Senate in 2014. Rep. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana said he’s running for the GOP nomination, but faces a primary challenge from retired Air Force veteran Rob Maness, with others still looking at the race.
