Over the past two days of DNC speeches, video packages and floor fights, it had become more and more clear that Democrats and President Obama had given up on trying to speak to the center of the country. If there were any interest in shoring up those elusive undecideds and independents, either they think the DNC isn’t the time to do it, or they truly believe that heated rhetoric advancing far-left positions on abortion, contraception, marriage, government activism and God wouldn’t turn off a country that’s reliably center-right.
The speeches — by social activists like Lilly Ledbetter, Sandra Fluke, NARAL president Nancy Keenan, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards and politicians like Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Rep. Barney Frank (Mass.), Current TV host and former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm — were full of the kind of red meat that base voters occupying the Charlotte arena absolutely loved.
