Thomas Menino, Boston’s longest serving mayor, has died at age 71.
“At just after 9 a.m. this morning the Honorable Thomas M. Menino passed into eternal rest after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his devoted wife Angela, loving family and friends,” Menino spokeswoman Dot Joyce said in a statement.
Menino, who was very popular with his constituents leaving office with about an 80% approval ratings, was never known for his public speaking. In his first TV ad he said “I’m not a fancy talked, but I get things done.” Which is exactly what he did. After the Boston Marathon bombing Menino checked himself out of the hospital to be with the people of Boston.
