As our regulars know, Thursday on The Cycle means it’s time for some political baseball. With our rain delay lifted and our football referees back at work, we’ve reached the eighth inning of our political baseball game, and it’s certainly a close one. As we volley back and forth on what type of election this has evolved into, one thing is clear: it’s a tight race. According to the latest Gallup daily tracking numbers, the polls show Governor Romney at 52% and President Obama at 45% among likely voters. Could be anyone’s game!
Will it come down to those few battleground states? From personal appearances to media ads, both candidates are working full steam ahead to get their campaign messages out there. According to an article in the National Journal: “Obama’s team, while conceding nothing publicly, is circling the wagons around Ohio, Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada… It is uncharacteristic of Team Obama to concede any terrain, but Plouffe offered no such assurances about Obama’s position in North Carolina, Virginia or Florida.” Thus, the swing states could ultimately decide who sits in the Oval Office for the next 4 years.
Let’s look at the numbers. If you examine the polls you’ll find the candidates virtually tied in a few battleground states. In Wisconsin, it’s 49-48 Obama. In Virginia, the NBC/Marist poll has Romney up by one. Then you have Ohio, where the president is up by three, according to SurveyUSA.
