On Wednesday, the First Lady capped off her China trip with a visit to China’s Chengdu Panda Base. Where along with her daughters and mother she got to feed the cute and cuddly animal.
“Today is the last day of my trip, and I couldn’t leave China without seeing the Chengdu Panda Base,” Michelle Obama wrote in her official White House travel journal.
Chengdu Panda Base, a bamboo-filled wonderland, is located in the outskirts of the Sichuan province’s capital. The facility, which currently houses 50 giant pandas, looks to promote breeding and research for the endangered species.
“Pandas are an endangered species — fewer than 1,600 pandas remain in the wild — and that’s why a place like the Chengdu Panda Base is so important,” Mrs. Obama wrote. “Here at this base, scientists work to increase the panda population through breeding, conservation and researching how the bears live and grow. The base covers almost 600 square miles, and it’s located right in the heart of pandas’ natural habitat.”
Michelle Obama’s seven-day, three-city tour of China was described as an educational and cultural trip where she updated her Instagram and Twitter accounts to help encourage young people across America to follow along on her journey.
