Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* In a sign of the times for today’s Republican Party, Laura Loomer, a 27-year-old right-wing commentator, won a GOP congressional primary in south Florida yesterday. Loomer, who’ll almost certainly lose in November, was backed by Roger Stone and Alex Jones in a district that includes Mar-a-Lago. Donald Trump endorsed the far-right provocateur this morning.
* In Wyoming, former Rep. Cynthia Lummis (R) won yesterday’s U.S. Senate primary, which means she’ll almost certainly return to Capitol Hill next year. The former congresswoman won a 10-way to primary to replace Sen. Mike Enzi (R), who’s retiring.
* In Alaska, Al Gross, a doctor and commercial fisherman, appears on track to win the Democratic U.S. Senate primary, and he’ll take on incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan (R) in the fall. Gross is also the son of former Alaska Attorney General Avrum Gross.
* Speaking of Alaska, it’s one of several states that require a witness sign absentee ballots. The Anchorage Daily News reported that the U.S. Postal Service, for reasons unknown, “has forbidden employees from signing absentee ballots as witnesses while on duty. The change could make it more difficult for Alaskans, particularly rural residents, to vote by mail.”
* After New Jersey moved forward with plans to mail every registered voter in the state a vote-by-mail ballot, Donald Trump’s lawyers sued New Jersey, demanding the state make it more difficult for voters. * It’s Night Three of the Democratic convention, and among the speakers the public will hear from are Kamala Harris, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama. * Looking at this Media Matters headline, I was reminded that Greene recently won a Republican congressional primary and will soon be an elected federal lawmaker: “Marjorie Taylor Greene visited the Capitol and tried to get Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib to retake their oaths on the Bible.” * Election Day may be 76 days away, but one month from today, early voting will be underway in five states: Minnesota and New Jersey, where early voting begins on Sept. 18, and South Dakota, Vermont, and Virginia, where early voting starts on Sept. 19.
