Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* In Maine, centrist Democratic Rep. Jared Golden has decided to retire at the end of his term. This creates a pick-up opportunity for Republicans: Donald Trump won the congressman’s district by 9 points last fall.
* In California, the day after voters easily approved Proposition 50 and cleared the way for a new congressional map that favors Democrats, California Republicans filed a federal lawsuit intended to block changes to the current district boundaries.
* Speaking of the Golden State, if Democrats ultimately succeed in advancing a redrawn map, two incumbent House Republicans — Ken Calvert and Young Kim — will have to face off against each other next year, in a rare member-vs-member contest.
* In recent years, pollsters have faced considerable criticisms for undercounting Republican support. This year, pollsters are facing the opposite criticisms: A Democratic wave took shape, and for the most part, this wasn’t reflected in the survey data.
* Though there was some still some uncertainty on Tuesday night about the outcome of Minneapolis’ mayoral race, it now appears that Democratic incumbent Jacob Frey has won a third term, outpacing Omar Fateh, a Somali American state legislator. * Five years after former Rep. Ben McAdams lost re-election, the Utah Democrat is launching a comeback bid, hoping to return to Congress thanks in part to a redrawn district map. * And in New York, Rep. Ritchie Torres is facing a new Democratic primary rival, former Democratic National Committee Vice Chair Michael Blake, who’s challenging the incumbent congressman from the left.
