Today’s edition of quick hits.
* The Abrego Garica case in court: “A federal judge on Monday temporarily barred the Trump administration from deporting Kilmar Abrego Garica to Uganda, pending a further hearing, NBC News reported.”
* In Gaza: “Israel struck southern Gaza’s main hospital with a missile and then fired another as journalists and rescue workers rushed to the scene, killing at least 20 people, local health workers said Monday. … Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office also said in a statement that Israel deeply regretted what it called ‘the tragic mishap that occurred today at the Nasser Hospital in Gaza.’”
* No good can come of this: “National Guard troops deployed to Washington this month to support President Donald Trump’s effort to mitigate crime began carrying firearms Sunday evening, according to the federal task force managing the operation.”
* Epstein files: “The ‘overwhelming majority’ of documents the Justice Department gave Congress in response to a subpoena for all information from its investigation into the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein had already been publicly released, the top Democrat on the House’s principal investigative committee said on Saturday.”
* Kushner’s off to a rough start: “France’s foreign ministry officials met Monday with a representative of U.S. ambassador Charles Kushner after the American diplomat was summoned over his letter to French President Emmanuel Macron alleging the country did not do enough to combat antisemitism. Monday’s meeting took place after Paris rejected Kushner’s criticism as ‘unacceptable’ and announced it had summoned him. Since the diplomat was absent, French officials met with the embassy’s No. 2 in his stead.”
* An overdue change in direction: “The IRS plans to ask workers who accepted offers of deferred resignation and early retirement to come back to work — an attempt to make up for staffing losses after the agency found it had vacancies in critical jobs.” * That was quick: “The second-highest-ranking official at the Treasury Department, Michael Faulkender, is departing President Trump’s administration after being confirmed by the Senate about five months ago.” * The most transparent administration ever, right? “The Department of Homeland Security rebuffed a request for public records related to the National Guard deployment in Los Angeles this summer, saying that the agency had not maintained text message data among top officials since early April, according to its communications with a nonprofit watchdog group.” See you tomorrow.
