Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum may take another shot at the White House in 2016, but he still hasn’t decided whether he’s up for the challenge again.
“Yeah, I don’t know if I can do this. It’s just tough,” the former Pennsylvania senator told the Associated Press in an interview published Saturday, adding that he’ll probably wait “at least” a year before making a decision.
Santorum dropped out of the 2012 presidential race two years ago this month after picking up a considerable number of delegates and challenging eventual nominee Mitt Romney longer than many other candidates in the field.
But he told the AP he has reasons not to run again, including his new job as CEO of a faith-based movie studio. He’s also taking another turn as an author, promoting a new book set to be released Monday in which he takes his own party to task for not always making working Americans a top priority.
“Do Republicans really care less about the person at the bottom of the ladder than Democrats do? To be painfully honest, I would have to say in some ways ‘yes,’” Santorum writes in “Blue Collar Conservatives: Recommitting to an America That Works,” according to the AP’s report.
Santorum said in the interview that the GOP is too often defined by what it opposes, rather than what it supports. “I’m looking at 2014 and I’m thinking the Republican Party is heading toward No-ville, which is ‘we’re against this, we’re against that, we’re against this.’ We’re not painting a positive vision for America,” he added. Fellow potential Republican candidate Jeb Bush also spoke about his 2016 intentions on Wednesday. He also remains undecided but is “thinking” about it.
