President Obama has a new shadow. Team Romney is kicking off the general election with a strategy called “bracketing.” Essentially, it means photocopying the President’s schedule and showing up everywhere the President goes — before, during and after the event takes place. Take a listen to Romney spokesman Ryan Williams speaking on a conference call with reporters this morning:
The strategy is well underway. That conference call was framed as “welcoming” the President to Ohio, as the White House had scheduled a speech near Cleveland this afternoon. The call was accompanied by a “Welcome Back to Ohio, President Obama” letter that was posted at ObamaIsn’tWorking.com. And take a look at the bus that showed up to greet the President outside the community college hosting his speech (photo after the jump). Not surprisingly, Mitt Romney himself will cap off the campaign blitz with personal rebuttal,
which his campaign announced would take place in the Cleveland area tomorrow.
There are still 202 days until the election, and it will take a lot of money, planning and support to carry on this strategy until November. At our editorial meeting today, we discussed two likely outcomes: the Romney campaign could look like a meticulous, organized machine, taking on the President at every corner; or they may end up seeming desperate for attention, trying to find the spotlight in the shadow of the President.
