A White House staffer who serves as a special assistant to President Obama and a House legislative liaison, has been charged with domestic violence after an allegedly violent altercation with her boyfriend.
Barvetta Singletary reportedly threatened her boyfriend, who is a U.S. Capitol Police officer, with his own gun on Friday after confronting him about his relationships with other women.
According to NBC Washington, Singletary had initially reached out to the alleged victim to engage in a sexual encounter. Afterward, an argument allegedly ensued during which Singletary demanded to get the passwords to her boyfriend’s smartphone. Police say she took his .40 caliber service weapon and aimed it at him when he refused to comply.
“You taught me how to use this. Don’t think I won’t use it,” the arresting document claims Singletary said. “Your phone is more important than me holding the gun on you,” she allegedly added.

Singletary then allegedly fired one round at her boyfriend, who fled the scene and contacted authorities after reportedly witnessing the accused wiping her fingerprints off the firearm. Singletary has since been placed on administrative leave by the White House. Her access to the White House has been revoked. “We are aware of the matter and have temporarily placed the employee in question on unpaid leave and revoked her access to the complex until we have more information,” the White House said in a statement regarding Singletary’s arrest. “We will take additional actions as needed. For further questions, I would refer you to the Prince George’s County Police Department.” In a separate statement, a spokesperson for the Capitol Police said: “We are investigating the matter mindful on the underlying criminal investigation. Department employees are held to a high standard of conduct and the matter will receive a thorough review consistent with our policies and procedures.” Singletary posted her $75,000 bail on Monday morning. Prior to working at the White House she served as a deputy chief of staff and policy director under South Carolina Democratic Rep. James Clyburn.
