Washington D.C. inspires a lot of real life drama and fodder for comedians, but politics largely took a backseat at this year’s Golden Globes.
Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler presided over the 71st Golden Globe Awards Sunday night without mention of politicians, keeping their jabs focused on Hollywood A-listers like George Clooney, Matt Damon and Meryl Streep.
But political shows were by no means ignored — at least during nominations. Netflix’s remake of the British political drama House of Cards lead the television category with four nominations, including best drama. But only Robin Wright came out victorious. She won “Best Performance by an Actress” for her role as Claire Underwood, the scheming wife of a corrupt U.S. congressman.
Wright’s fellow House of Cards cast-mates weren’t as lucky; Kevin Spacey lost the best actor award to Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad and Corey Stoll suffered defeat to Jon Voight of Ray Donovan in the best supporting actor category.
The Joe Biden endorsement also wasn’t enough for HBO’s Veep. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who was up for two awards last night, walked away empty-handed in the best actress category in a TV musical or comedy series for playing the character Selina Meyer, the first female U.S. vice president. Amy Poehler, ultimately, took the award for her starring role on Parks and Recreation.
Though embattled New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie couldn’t escape a few jabs over the growing “Bridgegate” scandal. The traffic jam of celebrities on the red carpet gave Jimmy Fallon an all too-easy opening. He joked, “Chris Christie’s directing traffic out there.”
Long delays for winners to reach the podium and general nervousness on-stage provided another opening for Christie snark on Twitter.
