Former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin actually agrees with liberals on something—so much so it’s making her question her party affiliation altogether.
“Finally, they have won me over. I actually agree with the liberals’ war whoop,” Palin wrote on Facebook last week. “I, too, demand that this issue of young illegal aliens flooding across our border into horrendous conditions be taken care of. Now!”
Palin’s remarks come after a week of news and debate over the more than 47,000 unaccompanied minors who have been detained crossing the borders since October, a 92% uptick from the same period the year before. The surge in border crossings —which the president’s administration says is motivated by extreme poverty, crime and violence back home—is overwhelming the system and shocking, inhumane conditions have been reported.
The American Civil Liberties Union and four other immigrant rights groups have issued a complaint, citing abuse by border patrol, as children who have been detained report physical abuse, harassment and verbal abuse, as well as being denied medical care, sanitary conditions, and water. Last week, the president ordered federal emergency authorities to take over the relief effort, opening new shelters for the children.
“As a Christian I find it unforgivable to ignore this issue of overrunning border security into these conditions in southern states, and this one issue is just about driving me to renounce my Republican ties because, see, even leaders on the RIGHT side of the aisle haven’t exerted all Constitutional power to stop the madness,” Palin wrote.
“I say this as a mother – a bleeding-heart compassionate woman and mother. I say, how dare anyone turn a blind eye and further harden your horrid heart when you see these pictures snuck out of the innocent children’s holding pens” she wrote.
But don’t worry, Palin hasn’t completely changed course—it’s still Obama’s fault. “Hang on to your hat, because here’s the issue: Barack Obama has orchestrated this newest “crisis” in order to overload the system with the intention of “fixing” the problems his own policies create,” Palin wrote. Republicans have blamed the president’s policies, saying they are encouraging illegal immigration despite the fact that under current law, very few of the immigrants who are detained at the border this way will be allowed to remain. “So, how much more will you take, Congress and We the People? I sense not enough guts in D.C. to file impeachment charges against Team Obama for their countless documented illegalities, so the way to stop this is at the ballot box,” she wrote, emphasizing voting for conservative candidates and holding anyone associated with Obama accountable.
