What began as a hilarious “Seinfeld” episode has now become an annual meme — Festivus — a fictional, but now, not-so-fake holiday invented by Frank Constanza (played by Jerry Stiller) to serve as a counter to the commercialization of the holidays.
Instead of Christmas tree, the family gathers around a bare aluminum pole, and the centerpiece of Festivus (“a Festivus for the rest of us!”) is that instead of exchanging gifts, you are supposed to let your loved ones know all the ways they have disappointed you in the last year.
Republican presidential candidate Sen. Rand Paul seized onto the Festivus tradition by taking shots at his GOP rivals. It may not help him rise in the polls, but he certainly gets a nod for creativity.
