- The top 10 Republican presidential candidates brought the heat during last night’s debate. The GOPers had a tough night facing off with ruthless moderators — namely Fox News’ Megyn Kelly — and attempting to set themselves apart. However, Donald Trump proved, once again, that he is good at being who he is. While the others, specifically John Kasich, gave solid performances, Trump dominated the stage — and still complained about not being treated fairly by the moderators. Here are some more takeaways from the prime-time debate.
- The seven lower-tier Republican candidates faced off earlier, at 5 p.m., to an arena that was nearly empty because of “safety concerns” with moving audiences in and out for the two debates, according to GOP sources. Even without crowds to cheer them on, the candidates did not play nice and took digs at Republican rival Donald Trump, as well as top Democratic contender Hillary Clinton. One stand-out star was Carly Fiorina, who commanded the stage with strong, well-articulated rhetoric.
- Sen. Chuck Schumer became the third Senate Democrat to oppose President Obama’s nuclear deal. This comes a few days after Obama gave a fiery speech at American University with pointed comments aimed at critics of the deal. Schumer, an influential Jewish lawmaker, said he believes, “Iran will not change, and under this agreement it will be able to achieve its dual goals of eliminating sanctions while ultimately retaining its nuclear and non-nuclear power.”
- Jon Stewart made his last appearance on “The Daily Show” last night, marking the end of a 16-year-long career as a leading political satirist. During the show, Stewart took the opportunity to criticize Republicans one last time and brought together a multitude of personalities who have previously appeared on the show, including Stephen Colbert.
- Kabul, Afghanistan, was shaken up by a truck bomb on Friday, killing at least 10 civilians and wounding 400, according to police and health officials. The death toll is likely to rise as rescue workers sift through the remains of the homes, Wahidullah Mayar, a spokesman for the country’s health ministry, said. Additionally, 50 homes were damaged by the blast. The explosion was the biggest truck bombing that the Afghan capital has ever experienced, even shocking residents who have lived through decades of war and violence.
