- The first GOP presidential debate takes place tonight and all eyes are on Donald Trump, the current GOP front-runner. The brash real estate mogul will take the center podium at the 9 p.m. debate hosted by Fox News. Flanking him will be former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Others in the crowded Republican field — including Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina — will get their turn on the stage at a 5 p.m. debate, which will not have a live audience.
- President Obama fired back at critics of the Iran nuclear deal during a speech Wednesday at American University. The president compared the deal to the decision to invade Iraq in the early 2000s, calling it the most important foreign policy debate since that war. Obama said that if the deal doesn’t pass, then Iran will have a clearer and faster path to obtaining nuclear weapons.
- Bill Cosby will be deposed in October in a case involving Judy Huth, one of the many women accusing him of sexual assault. Huth, who was a 15 years old at the time of the alleged sexual assault, claims that Cosby got her drunk at the Playboy Mansion in 1974 and then sexually molested her by “taking her hand in his hand and performing a sex act on himself without her consent.” A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge ordered Cosby to give a deposition on Oct. 9.
- A plane fragment found last week was confirmed on Wednesday to be a piece from the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370. While it provides some closure to the mystery, experts say it will still be difficult to pinpoint the main section of the airplane, which would include the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder. More debris, including a plane window, was found on Thursday morning.
- New details have emerged about the man who attacked moviegoers on Wednesday before being shot by police. Identified as Vincente David Montano, he is said to have a history of mental health problems, including paranoid schizophrenia. Officials said they are still trying to figure out Montano’s motives by examining where he has been, who his friends are and who he was talking to.
