John Sununu’s claim that Colin Powell endorsed President Obama because both men are black shouldn’t have come as a surprise. Sununu, a top surrogate for the Mitt Romney campaign, has made a habit of leveling racially charged attacks against Obama, with nary a word of condemnation from the Republican nominee for president.
The former chief of staff for former George H.W. Bush and a former governor of New Hampshire, Sununu has been an active Romney surrogate on the cable TV circuit. His remarks are often bombastic and aggressive, but in several cases they’ve crossed the line into more offensive territory, sometimes forcing him to later “clarify” his meaning. Yet with the election less than two weeks away, Sununu survives as a co-chair of the Romney campaign.
Let’s play Sununu says:
The president isn’t even smart (Harvard be damned):
“When you’re not that bright you can’t get better prepared,” Sununu said of Obama following the first presidential debate.
Obama isn’t really an American:
The men and women all over America who have worked hard to build these businesses, their businesses, from the ground up is how our economy became the envy of the world. It is the American way. And I wish this president would learn how to be an American.
Obama is definitely a foreigner (Indonesia! Hawaii!!):
He has no idea how the American system functions, and we shouldn’t be surprised about that, because he spent his early years in Hawaii smoking something, spent the next set of years in Indonesia, another set of years in Indonesia. And, frankly, when he came to the U.S. he worked as a community organizer, which is a socialized structure, and then got into politics in Chicago.
Obama is lazy, disengaged, and incompetent:
