“This is the nightmare that New Orleans residents have worried about for years,” NBC’s Natalie Morales said on “TODAY” on the morning of Aug. 29, 2005, shortly after Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana.
The loss of life and devastation of property was staggering as the storm flooded 80% of the city. In the days that followed, residents who lost their homes cried out for food and shelter. More than 1,800 people died as a result of the storm, which caused more than $100 billlion in damage.
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the storm, “TODAY” compiled footage from the day the hurricane hit the Gulf Coast, as well as from the devastating days that followed.
