Jindal was only 24 years old when he started the position in the Louisiana administration. Under his tenure, “he rescued Louisiana’s Medicaid program from bankruptcy, childhood immunizations increased, Louisiana ranked third best nationally in health care screenings for children, and new and expanded services for elderly and disabled persons were offered,” according to Jindal’s website.
Jindal’s response to Hurricane Katrina as congressman? “If we had been investing resources in restoring our coast, it wouldn’t have prevented the storm, but the barrier islands would have absorbed some of the tidal surge,” he said in 2005. Jindal served two terms in Congress before running for governor again in 2007. “Louisiana has the lowest unemployment rate in the South, tied for seventh lowest in the nation,” Jindal wrote in an op-ed for Forbes in 2014. “Since January 2008, economic growth that is 50 percent higher than the nation, and one of the best records of private-sector job growth in the country.” In 2006, Jindal voted in favor of a 2006 constitutional proposal that defined marriage between a man and a woman.
