The Democratic National Committee is having a bit of fun with Mitt Romney’s tax plan ahead of Tuesday’s debate in the form of a snarky website.
The DNC-created RomneyTaxPlan.com site masquerades as a Romney campaign page. It promises “a detailed explanation of how the Romney-Ryan tax plan is able to cut taxes by $5 trillion without raising taxes on the middle class or exploding the deficit.”
The site tells visitors to simply click the “GET THE DETAILS” red button. The joke unfurls when you scroll over the button, hoping to click through for the details. Instead, the button begins to dance away from you in a perpetual game of hide n’seek. And there’s the DNC’s metaphor for what the Romney tax plan consists of to date.
Romney and his running mate Rep. Paul Ryan have repeatedly been pressed for details on how his tax plan would cut taxes while remaining “revenue neutral.” Both have said they would close loopholes but the details must be worked out with Congress, not outlined now—before Americans go to the polls.
President Obama and Romney sparred over the impact of the Republican’s proposed tax cuts (extension of the Bush tax cuts and a 20% across the board cut) during the last debate. The president termed it a “$5 trillion tax cut,” based on a study by the non-partisan Tax Policy Center. Romney refused to accept that terminology. The DNC site further critiques Romney for his now notorious “47%” comments. The top part of the page plays off the Romney logo with the words “Romney: Believe in (half of) America.”
