Musician Ariana Grande took to Twitter Sunday to vent her frustrations about how women in media are portrayed as “possessions,” writing “I do not belong to anyone but myself. And neither do you.”
According to music website Idolator, Grande criticized the media’s double standards for women in a Saturday episode of “Honeymoon Diaries,” a YouTube show in which the artist shares details about her world tour. The video episode has not yet been made public. On Sunday morning, the 21-year-old posted an essay to Twitter reiterating how she is questioned about the men she has dated in the past — and who she’s dating now — rather than being asked about her as an individual.
“I am tired of living in a world where women are mostly referred to as a man’s past, present or future PROPERTY / POSSESSION … I have come to the realization that I have SO MUCH MORE to talk about,” Grande wrote.
The musician pointed to female activists in her family, as well as Gloria Steinem, as inspirations.
