On Saturday, Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course hosted investors, enthusiasts and socialites alike, as libations — and pouring rain — flowed in advance of 2015 Preakness Stakes.
Amid the sloppy, muddy conditions, 2015 Kentucky Derby winner American Pharoah came in first in the Preakness, keeping alive the possibility that the horse could win the Triple Crown. Big money was banked on the Derby champ, the favorite to win the Preakness. The third and final race of the Triple Crown series, the Belmont Stakes, takes place on June 6.
American Pharoah, once valued at $300,000, is now worth $15 million or more according to some experts. The figure is sure to soar with Saturday’s win.
The day’s colorful festivities, however, were set in a city that has recently seen historic turmoil. The death of unarmed black man Freddie Gray, who suffered fatal injuries while in police custody, sparked protests, which at one point turned violent, and highlighted an embattled police force. American Pharoah’s owners said afterward that the city provided a welcoming setting for the race.
