British singer-songwriter Adele is the biggest name in music these days, and she credits an unlikely political figure with giving her career a boost – former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
According to a recent BBC interview, Adele gave props to the former vice presidential nominee for increasing her public exposure at a crucial moment, by appearing on an Oct. 18, 2008 episode of “Saturday Night Live” on which she was the musical guest. The ratings for the episode were through the roof and Adele saw her profile raised in the U.S. virtually overnight.
“It was one of the most watched “SNL”s ever and then it was two weeks before the Grammy ballot, which is when people decide what songs they want to maybe nominate, so, like, literally the stars aligned for me,” Adele said.

“The album shot to number one on iTunes and I was nominated for a Grammy and then I won one! It was a joke! It was a joke. All thanks to Sarah Palin!” she added.
The episode marked the first time Palin appeared on “SNL,” in a brief cameo during the cold opening. She would appear on the show again in November of 2008 just three days before going down to defeat in the general election against Barack Obama and Joe Biden. That episode featured Amy Poehler’s legendary “Palin Rap,” which has been hailed as one of the all-time highlights of the 40-year-old sketch series history:
Palin, who is very active on social media, must have caught wind of the shout out because on Saturday she posted a copy of her new book “Sweet Freedom” with an effusive thank you note handwritten by Palin, with direct references to a couple Adele hits like “Rumor Has It” and “Someone Like You.”
