Suspect Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev suffered multiple injuries, including a gunshot wound to the face, before his capture in April, according to newly unsealed court documents.
“He has multiple gunshot wounds, the most severe of which appears to have entered through the left side inside of his mouth and exited the left face, lower face,” Dr. Stephen Ray Odom, of Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, said according to the transcript from when Tsarnaev was taken from a boat in a Watertown, Mass., backyard after a manhunt that shut down surrounding areas.
The suspect, now 20, suffered a skull-base fracture that affected parts of his body including the middle ear, pharynx, and mouth, NBC News reported.
Police killed Tsarnaev’s older brother Tamerlan, the second bombing suspect, during a shootout days after pressure-cooker bombs exploded near the finish line of the marathon on April 22. He plead not guilty on July 10 to the bombing, which killed three people and wounded more than 260.
