The House Oversight Committee “has identified no evidence whatsoever” to substantiate claims that the White House directed the IRS to target conservative groups, according to a 36-page memo released Tuesday by committee ranking member Rep. Elijah Cummings.
“There has not been one scintilla of evidence yet linking the White House with this situation,” Cummings argued on msnbc Tuesday. Cummings added that the committee was committed to investigating “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth,” no matter what direction the findings pointed toward.
The memo contains 15 transcribed interviews conducted with IRS employees in Cincinnati and Washington, D.C., including six who identify themselves as Republicans or having voted Republican.
Cummings previously released more than 200 pages of transcripts of an interview the House committee conducted with a Cincinnati-based IRS group manager, who confirmed the IRS’ targeting of conservative groups was not directed by the White House. There will be a hearing in the committee on Thursday, where Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa has promised new witnesses that would prove Cummings wrong.
