Tuesday night on All In with Chris Hayes: President Obama visited an Amazon warehouse in Tennessee to lay out his plan for a “grand bargain” aimed at rebuilding the middle class. The compromise would cut the corporate tax rate, with a preferential rate for manufacturers, while also closing loopholes as part of a broader tax code overhaul. While no specific figures were given, the revenues raised would be used towards improving infrastructure, supporting community colleges and job retraining programs and promoting manufacturing jobs. Unsurprisingly, House Speaker John Boehner spoke out against the “grand bargain” proposal even before the details were released. Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah, member of the Tea Party movement, and David Cay Johnston, President of Investigative Reporters & Editors and a columnist for TaxAnalysts.com, will join host Chris Hayes to discuss the president’s plan and its likelihood of gaining bipartisan support.
Also Tuesday, a verdict was reached in the trial of Bradley Manning. The Army private, who gave thousands of classified government documents to WikiLeaks, was found not guilty of aiding the enemy, the most serious charge he faced. On 20 of the remaining 21 lower offenses, however, Manning was found guilty, with a maximum total sentence of 136 years in prison. Elizabeth Goitein, co-director of the Brennan Center for Justice’s Liberty & National Security Program, will join the table to discuss the verdict and what lies ahead for Pfc. Manning.
Later, Hayes will talk with Cord Jefferson, West Coast editor for Gawker.com, about his tongue-in-cheek article blaming a riot last weekend in Huntington Beach, Calif., after a surfing competition on “white-on-white crime” and the failure of white parenting.
