FERGUSON, Mo. — Darren Wilson, the Ferguson police officer involved in the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, was quietly married last month.
Wilson, 28, married Barbara Spradling, 37, who is also a Ferguson police officer, on October 24, according to a marriage license examined by NBC News. Wilson and Spradling applied for the license on October 17.
One of the two witnesses at the ceremony was Greg Kloeppel, who is one of Wilson’s lawyers. The other witness appears to have signed his or her name as J. Skelton. The ceremony was performed by Christopher Graville, a municipal judge, according to the license.
Wilson obtained the license at a St. Louis County government building just across the street from the building where a grand jury has been meeting to decide whether he’ll face charges in Brown’s Aug. 9 death. The shooting of Brown, who was unarmed, has set off bitter protests in this St. Louis suburb which continue to this day.
Wilson has been on paid leave from the department since August, and has remained almost entirely out of sight in the intervening period. Earlier this year, Wilson received a commendation from the Ferguson Police Department for arresting a suspect in a drug case. The grand jury was scheduled to meet again Monday, with a decision expected any day.
