President Barack Obama will kick off a bus tour on Thursday to unveil his new plan to keep college affordable. The trip comes during a time of crisis in Egypt and Syria, and as Americans renewed their calls for gun reform after shots were fired at a Georgia school earlier this week. Our panel will discuss how the president plans to refocus attention on education amid other pressing challenges. Later, we’ll ask Senator Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., to weigh in on these issues.
Earlier this month North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed what many consider to be one of the most restrictive voter ID bills in the country. Civil rights groups responded immediately with lawsuits challenging the law. Reverend Dr. William Barber, president of North Carolina’s NAACP chapter, is behind on of those lawsuits and he’ll discuss his efforts to get the law repealed.
Next Wednesday will mark the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I have a dream” speech. This weekend more than 100,000 people are expected to participate in another March on Washington commemorating that address. Dr. King’s son Martin Luther King the Third and union leader Lee Saunders will discuss how far the civil rights movement has come since then, and how far it still has to go.
President Obama seems to have narrowed his choices for the next Fed Chairman to two people: Harvard University’s Larry Summers and the Fed’s Vice Chair Janet Yellen. Our economic experts will discuss the differences between the two distinguished candidates. And 16-year-old Hannah Anderson, a California teen who was recently kidnapped and found in the Idaho wilderness, spoke with NBC’s Today Show Thursday morning about her terrible ordeal. We’ll have more on her harrowing story on Jansing & Co.
